Hosi Daruwala, Our smile Ambassador and cancer survivor, finds solace in helping cancer patients and believes it's all worth it if can bring smiles to the faces of afflicted
Hosi D Daruwala or 'Uncle' as he is fondly called in his neighbourhood is well known for his services to cancer patients. The 71-year-old, who had been suffering from cancer for around 13 years, emerged victorious in his battle against the dreaded disease and ever since he was diagnosed with the disease, Daruwala decided to help those who have been afflicted, especially the poor.
Having gone through the medical procedures himself, Hosi Uncle now helps poor patients file their applications and ensure they go for regular health check-up.
Every evening between 8 and 12, Hoshi Daruwala sits on his sewing machine and sews together after segregating pieces of used cloth rags he collects throughout the day to make quilts and pillows for cancer patients in the Indian Cancer Society, (ICS), and Tata hospital. “The gratitude on their faces reveals how much they need us,” states Hosi, a social worker with a warm smile on his face. Uncle Hosi himself has stitched more than 4000 quilts and 4000 pillows which he has distributed to poor and needy cancer patients. He also distributes home-made concoction of methi and garlic which helps relieve pain.
Proud to have Hosi Uncle our ‘smile ambassador’ who himself is a cancer survivor. He is an inspiration to not only cancer patients but also to normal people like us. Doctors had said that he may survive only for six months but he fought with the disease successfully and he is still going strong from last 13 years helping many patients to give the courage to fight the disease with strong heart.
